The groundbreaking tool changer
The heart and most outstanding feature of the Prusa XL is its automatic tool changer. Instead of a single extruder feeding different filaments through a nozzle, the printer switches between complete toolheads. This version comes with two toolheads and can be expanded to up to five.
Advantages over traditional systems: This approach eliminates the need for complex wipe towers, which waste filament and time in conventional multi-material systems. The changeover is clean and fast. This means less waste, drastically reduced print times and a higher success rate, as the risk of cross-contamination between colours or materials is virtually eliminated.
True multi-material capability: As each tool head has its own extruder and hotend, you can combine materials with completely different printing temperatures and properties, e.g. rigid PETG with flexible TPU or PLA with water-soluble support materials (PVA/BVOH) for complex geometries.
The "Nextruder": Precision redefined
The newly developed "Nextruder" is a technological masterpiece. This direct-drive extruder features a large planetary gear (10:1 ratio), which enables enormous force and the highest precision in filament feeding.
Reliability and control: The high gear ratio gives the system unrivalled control over the filament flow, resulting in flawless surface quality and the ability to process even the most demanding filaments.
Integrated intelligence: A special breakout board integrated into the extruder houses all electronic components, such as fans and temperature sensors. This significantly simplifies maintenance, as all parts are connected via a single connector.
Intelligent Modular Heated Bed
Another world first is the segmented heated bed. Instead of a single large heating plate, the Prusa XL’s heated bed consists of 16 individually controlled tiles.
Energy efficiency and anti-warping: This design saves a massive amount of energy. When printing a small object, only the area of the bed directly beneath it is heated. For large prints, the targeted heat distribution prevents thermal stresses in the part, effectively combating warping – one of the biggest challenges in large-format printing.
A perfect first layer, every time: Load cell calibration:
The Prusa XL completely eliminates the need for manual first-layer calibration. A high-precision load cell sensor is integrated into the heated bed design.
Fully automatic perfection: Before each print, the nozzle gently taps the print bed at several points. The sensor measures the exact contact point with microscopic precision and creates a perfect height map of the print bed. Manual adjustments such as "Live-Z" are a thing of the past. The result is a consistently perfect first layer, which is the foundation of every successful print.

Multi-material support – Perfect surface finish
Materials such as PLA and PETG do not adhere strongly to one another, making them an ideal combination for situations where you do not want to use expensive soluble supports. You can use the cheapest PLA to support PETG and then peel them off in one piece, leaving a perfect model surface.

Rigid and flexible
This model of a human hand, created using CT scan data, combines rigid PLA with flexible filaments to achieve incredible detail and functionality. This enables surgeons to better identify which parts of the bone have greater range of motion and to demonstrate this to their patients. Special locks inside the model have been developed to improve the fit between PLA and flex parts.

PCCF screwdriver with PETG infill
PCCF is one of the best-looking filaments on the market, but it is certainly not the cheapest. A good option is to use it for the surface, whilst the infill can be printed with a cheaper (but still very durable) PETG material.
