TROLLFACTORY - Starter Set Type 2 - Mould Making

Starter Set Beginner's Set Mould Making Silicone Rubber Moulding NV Small

Have you always wanted to make your own moulds using silicone,
but aren’t quite sure what you need or how to go about it?

Here is the starter kit for this, and it contains everything you need to get started straight away.

Contents of the starter kit:

- 1x TFC Silicone Rubber Type 2 Impression Silicone Medium Hard 1:1 NV 500g

- 1x aluminium moulding frame with base plate 20x20cm

- 1x 250g non-hardening, sulphur-free modelling clay

- 1x TFC release agent Vaseline Silicone - Silicone 50ml

- 1x reference book ‘Working with Silicone’ – detailed instructions for mould making

TFC Silicone Rubber Type 2, medium-hard
Contents: 500g

Addition-curing 2-component silicone rubber that vulcanises at room temperature.
The silicone is supplied in high-quality plastic squeeze bottles with a dosing cap.
This makes dispensing very easy and clean.
Precise dosing is effortless, just as you would expect from comparable food packaging, for example
and represents a significant improvement on the usual tin cans or wide-neck bottles.

Aluminium moulding frame with base plate 20x20cm

Adjustable aluminium moulding frame, comprising:

4 aluminium angle plates, dimensions 100mm x 200mm x 50mm
1 aluminium base plate, dimensions 200mm x 200mm

The 4 angle plates can be moved relative to one another in various ways,
so that a variable moulding box can be precisely adapted to the model,
to achieve an optimal shape, i.e. to use only the amount of moulding material / casting material that is actually required.

Plastilin modelling clay, non-hardening
Colour: orange
Contents: 250g

Wax-based, soft-remaining modelling clay.
Easy to mould, does not stain or leave a greasy residue. Suitable for children aged 3 and over.

TFC Release Vaseline Silicone

Silicone mould release vaseline is applied thinly to the fully cured silicone mould during mould production, and the freshly mixed silicone for the second mould half is then poured onto it. This prevents the two mould halves from sticking together. The release vaseline is free from harmful substances!

Book: Working with Silicone by Rainer Habekost and Alexandra Wagner

Silicone rubber is an extremely flexible material suitable for many applications.
The following book focuses primarily on applications in the hobby sector, detailing the many different possibilities of moulding are described in detail and, in some cases, illustrated. To ensure that the practical hobbyist understands exactly what material they are dealing with, the practical section is preceded by a theoretical section.
This consists of an overview of the various applications for which the material is used, as well as the different types of silicone rubber available on the market today.

TFC Silicone Rubber Type 2

TFC Silicone Rubber Type 2 is very well suited for the production of sophisticated, elastic and durable moulds with undercuts.

TFC Silicone Rubber Type 2 can be used to produce single- or multi-part moulds,
for casting original models made of wood, glass, metal, plastic, wax or ceramic casting compounds.
You can cast in the moulds produced using all water-soluble casting materials, such as
relief casting compounds like Stewalin, Plastalin Super, Keraflott or plaster, Keramin, Alabit, modelling and model-making plaster, casting clay, cement, concrete, etc.

Soap moulding compounds (soap glycerine) for making your own soap
or waxes for making candles can be used without any problems, as can casting with casting resins (resin).
In this case, you should pre-treat the mould with a release agent before pouring,
as casting resins can cause the mould to become brittle after repeated use.
In general, Type 2 silicone has a very long service life.

The silicone has not been tested for skin and mucous membrane compatibility, nor for use in conjunction with food.
If you are looking for silicones to use in conjunction with food or for body moulding, please ask us.
We also have suitable materials for this in our range.

General use

To produce silicone moulds, you must first determine what you wish to replicate and what casting material the object will be made of. This is of great importance, as there are different types of silicone with varying degrees of hardness and flexibility. Heat resistance is also an important factor. Please refer to the areas of application and the individual product properties of the silicones in the respective descriptions.

Once you have selected the appropriate silicone, the following materials should be prepared: moulding frame, modelling clay, object to be moulded, pouring container, wooden spoon (or similar), scales, separating vaseline, brush and a knife. Due to the short processing times, place these within easy reach right at the start. The moulding frame should then be positioned so that there is at least 2 cm of space between the frame and the object. To seal the mould, roll out a layer of non-hardening modelling clay (e.g. plasticine) onto the base plate; any remaining gaps in the corners must also be sealed. The object can then be brushed with separating vaseline and pressed into the clay at the base to secure it.

The selected silicone is then mixed in the ratio specified by the manufacturer (usually 1:1 by weight). Using a set of scales, the base (A) and the catalyst (B) can then be mixed in the specified ratio. Both components are then thoroughly mixed together for approx. 1 minute to form a homogeneous mass. The silicone is then poured evenly into the prepared moulding frame.

The final step is curing. Here, the silicone must cure completely within the time specified by the manufacturer, usually at 23°C. Once fully cured, the frame and the modelling clay can be removed. With a soft silicone, the object being moulded can be easily removed from the mould. If a medium-hard silicone has been chosen, it may be necessary to cut it open with a knife. The resulting gap can be sealed with a rubber band during subsequent casting. The cured silicone mould can now be filled with various casting materials. These vary depending on the type of silicone rubber selected. Examples include ceramics, plaster, concrete, tin, foodstuffs, etc.
